January 2010 Breakfast Campaign

Update: All breakfast poster contest submissions have been recieved and we are currently in the process of judging the entries. Winners will be announced soon.

On Tuesday, February 9th, First Lady Michelle Obama launched “Let’s Move,” a nationwide campaign to end childhood obesity within the next generation.  The campaign is taking a comprehensive approach, calling for support and resources from all sectors of society, including our nation’s schools.  Mrs. Obama is encouraging schools across the country to participate in the HealthierUS School Challenge, a program developed by the United States Department of Agriculture recognizing communities that create healthier environments through the promotion of good nutrition, nutrition education and physical activity. As the industry leader in school dining, Chartwells  is committed to partnering with the communities we serve to, at a minimum, more than quadruple the number that qualify for gold level nutrition status of the HealthierUS School Challenge by the close of the 2010-2011 school year.

Chartbusters 2009-2010 School Year Promotions:

As we begin the 2009-2010 school year, Chartwells School Dining Services is pleased to introduce the new Chartbusters program. Chartbusters is a year-long program containing promotion ideas and special event activities developed to maximize cafeteria participation in the National School Breakfast and Lunch program.

This year we have created three separate promotion campaigns to build excitement in the cafeteria for elementary, middle and high school students throughout the school year. These exciting promotions are intended to improve school meal participation and educate your elementary, middle and high school students about the importance of eating healthy and balanced meals.  Our fall promotion will focus on Food and Cultures, the winter promotion will focus on Breakfast and the spring promotion will focus on Sustainability.

Food & Culture Trivia

Wheat trivia
:

“Did you know that one bushel of wheat contains about 1 million kernels and one acre of wheat can produce enough wheat to furnish your family with bread for nearly 10 years.  More foods are made with wheat than any other cereal grain.   The workers who built the pyramids in Egypt were paid in bread.  The United States uses over 3 million bushels of wheat each day.”

Rice trivia:

Did you know that rice is mankind's largest food crop. People all over the world eat rice. In the United States, we each eat about 27 pounds of rice per year.  There are three basic types of rice. Long grain rice is at least four times as long as it is wide. Medium grain rice is plump in shape and short grain rice is almost round.  One of the most nutritious foods available today, rice is low in calories, is fat, sodium and cholesterol free, and it provides you with lots of energy.”

Bean trivia:

“Did you know that beans have been used throughout the world for thousands of years. They come in hundreds of shapes sizes and colors, are versatile and amazingly convenient because they can be dried and stored for years.  Beans are one of the most nutritionally complete foods available. Beans are the only food that fits into two groups on the USDA Food Guide Pyramid: vegetable and protein.
